Your Favorite Farm Job: Become a Worker Share!
When it comes to farm work, my all-time favorite is harvesting. For whatever reason, I love pulling peppers off plants, carrots out of the ground, or cutting lettuce heads. Dirk does not like harvesting. Dirk’s favorite job is anything involving a tractor – soil tillage, bed making, or even mowing. I do not like tractor work. But fortunately, because we’re different people with different favorite jobs, we make a great farm team.
But we could always add members to our farm team – people like you!
We’re looking for people who would be willing to be a Worker Share this year! What is a Worker Share? A Worker Share is someone who commits to working a two- or four-hour shift per week on our farm in exchange for a Small or Standard Farm Share.
You’d be an important part of our farm team, helping us with different jobs that allow us to get our vegetables from seed to people’s plates. Work on the farm will look slightly different every day but farm work falls into some general patterns of harvesting, weeding, washing vegetables, and packing vegetables.
Our Worker Shares harvesting radishes
We’ve had the pleasure of working with two women the past two years who have made it possible for us to get vegetables harvested, washed, and packed up every Wednesday. We are so grateful for Judy and Debbie and their hard work. Here’s what the Worker Share means to them in their own words:
“This will be my third year as a worker share. I love working on the farm because it makes my soul happy! I get to be out in nature, feel the sun on my face, and the earth on my hands. I earn the freshest, most delicious veggies, plus I get to work with some of the nicest people!” – Judy
“I love participating in a worker share – my third year! For a small investment of time, I get to take home healthy, yummy vegetables I see where they have been grown and lovingly cared for harvested. Working with wonderful farmers and workers is an added plus.” – Debbie

The Details
We’re seeking people for specific jobs. We divide these jobs between indoor work and outdoor work.
Indoor work may include washing vegetables, bagging vegetables, packing shares, cleaning harvest totes and share boxes, and cleaning the Pack Shed. Indoor work will be done inside our Pack Shed. Workers will be shielded from the extremes of weather and the jobs will be less physically demanding. Workers will need to have attention to detail, ability to carry out repetitive jobs, and high-quality standards.
Outdoor work may include starting seeds, planting transplants, weeding, and harvesting vegetables. Outdoor work will be done on uneven terrain in all weather conditions. Workers will need to be comfortable bending, lifting, and carrying. Workers will need to be able to follow instructions, work quickly, and have high-quality standards.
Weekly shifts are as follows:
Monday: 8:30 am to 12:30 pm (Outdoor), Off-hours (Outdoor or Indoor)
Tuesday: 8:30 am to 12:30 pm (Outdoor), Off-hours (Outdoor or Indoor)
Wednesday: 8:30 to 12:30 pm (Indoor)
Off-hour shifts occur after our workday concludes and are two-hour shifts. They may start at either 5 pm or 6 pm. Off-hour workers will need to be self-motivated and ok working alone. We will train you and orient you to the different tasks but we have young children and will not be working every off-hour shift with you. Based on your availability and abilities, you may choose to either do Indoor or Outdoor work.
A four-hour shift will entitle you to a Standard Farm Share. A two-hour shift will entitle you to a Small Farm Share.
If you think becoming a Worker Share would fit with you and you want to figure out your favorite farm job, please let us know! Or share this with someone else who might be interested!
